Applied Solutions, ISERC offer wealth of opportunities Hopefully, spring is in the air wherever you are, and the coming of spring means it is time for you to start making plans to attend the 2014 IIE Annual Conference and Expo. The conference will be held from May 31 to June 3 at the Palais des Congrés de Montréal in Montréal. Each year, the IIE Annual Conference and Expo hosts two concurrent conferences: the Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Conference (ISERC) and the Applied Solutions Conference. SEMS sponsors Engineering Management tracks in both events, and preparations are well underway to make these tracks, once again, among the best at the conference. ISERC and Applied Solutions will provide many learning and networking opportunities for SEMS members and for anyone interested in engineering management topics. Attendees from industry and academia will come away with much value in terms of new knowledge, findings from current research, and case studies and applications of industrial engineering methods and tools. The Engineering Management track at ISERC is always one of the largest, best attended tracks at the conference, and this year will be no exception. The track co-chairs, Brian K. Smith from Missouri University of Science and Technology (smithbrian@mst. edu), Craig Downing from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (downing@rose-hulman.edu), and Sreekanth Ramakrishnan from IBM Corp. (sreeekan@us.ibm.com), are working with presenters from all over the world to ensure the highest quality conference. The conference has received 111 abstracts for presentations, which the track chairs will review, make suggestions for any modifications and improvements, and rate for suitability. The best contributors will present in the ISERC Engineering Management track. Peer-reviewed and refereed papers accompany a majority of the presentations at ISERC. The best of these papers undergo a second review process by a specially appointed panel that will select three finalists and a winner for best paper. The winner and the other two finalists will be recognized at the SEMS Town Hall meeting during the conference, and their presentations will be organized into a special session held at ISERC. The featured speaker for 2013 will be Warren A. Boldrin, a senior manager in IBM's Integrated Supply Chain Organization. Boldrin has more than 25 years of experience in manufacturing operations, logistics and quality engineering. Learn about Boldrin's presen- tation at the conference by reading his contributed piece in this edition of SEMS Says. The Engineering Management track at the Applied Solutions Conference is designed for practitioners from around the world to learn and share tools, methods and results on effective and economic managerial techniques and philosophies.
